Puyallup,Washington
Puyallup is eight miles southeast of Tacoma along Highway 167. The name translates to “generous people” in Native American language.
Puyallup Valley attracted farmers, both Native, and European settlers for thousands of years. Ezra Meeker, Oregon Trail pioneer, and hop grower planned the city in 1877. Thanks to Ezra Meeker, hop crops grew in the agricultural center, drawing industry, exports, and wages for immigrant labor to the valley.
You can visit his homestead, The Meeker Mansion, at 321 East Pioneer. The Meeker Mansion is one of the several buildings in Puyallup on the National Register of Historic Places.
Living in Puyallup
Our community of about 40,000 is an active and civic-oriented collective of friends and families. We volunteer, get involved, and enjoy the scenic landscape that surrounds our fertile valley.
The Puyallup Library hosts Adult Summer Reading Programs in the summer to encourage group activities and intellectual prowess.
We are always striving for stewardship. The Sustainable Puyallup Initiative installed solar panels on the roof of Pioneer Park Pavilion that generates electricity for the building. The grant-funded project sets a positive example to the residents of the town in the ways of conservation and renewable resources.
Rented garden plots on the Brown property, 19th Avenue SW in Puyallup are available for year-round organic gardening to grow fresh produce that is shared but not sold. Flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables arrive each year thanks to the efforts of our local gardeners.
Parks in Puyallup
Clarks Creek Park has a north and south section, each with recreational equipment. The north part of the park has lighted tennis courts, a softball field, trails, a creek, and open play area. The southern section hosts a picnic shelter, creek access, playground and leads to the off-the-leash dog park.
Pioneer Park, in downtown Puyallup, hosts the farmer’s market and is home to the Kiwanis Kids Spray Park, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The park is a central gathering place for friends and families in town.
The Fair
Washington State Fair, one of the largest fairs in the world, is a 21-day extravaganza held in September at the fairgrounds here in Puyallup. There is a Spring Fair, but it’s a three-day event vs. a three-week gathering.
What began in 1900 as a way to showcase agriculture and animal husbandry in the valley is now an annual event that attracts over 1 million visitors to its 160-acre facility. Roller coasters, fine art shows, 190 food vendors, livestock, and concerts fill the grounds and calendars of all involved.
Education in Puyallup
Within the school district, we have 21 elementary schools, seven junior high schools, three comprehensive senior high schools, and an alternative school, that serve 22,250 students.
